Smiths Falls styrofoam cups or frozen chicken trays may well become a crown molding if a town investigation into the feasibility of recycling polystyrene locally goes forward.
The idea was noted during Elaine Mallory's ,Offers Art Reproductions Fine Art oil painting reproduction, sustainable development 2012 budget presentation to councillors Jan. 30.
"It shows the Town's commitment to being a "leading environmental community," said Mallory in an e-mail interview last week.
The addition, if approved, would be the second phase of Smiths Falls' commitment to reducing its environmental footprint. In January 2011 the town introduced a two-box pick-up schedule with an enhanced list of paper, plastic and glass available. This new proposal would not be door-to-door pick-up as the blue and gold boxes are,This is interesting cube puzzle and logical game. but would provide residents the chance to reduce their curbside pick-up none-the-less by depositing their polystyrene in a recycling bin within the community rather than tossing them in their garbage bags.
"We are currently seeking a partner for locating a bin in a central location and hopefully co-sponsoring the bin," Mallory said.
The new program does come with some financial implications. In up-front costs, the bin itself will come in at around $150 a month and $50 for every pick-up, however, Mallory points out some of these dollars could be reimbursed through marketing the recycled product.
The community bin would welcome cleaned polystyrene and plastic bags. Residents would be asked to wash all food, break up items into large sections and place into a clear plastic bag to avoid the material from escaping.
Town staff is recommending implementing an education program to coincide with the launch of the initiative at an additional cost. This launch could take place as early as this spring. This includes reduction of landfill material, particularly one that is difficult to break down. Mallory has included the initiative as part of her 2012 budget projects, but will bring it back to council's attention in the near future when further details are known.
